Folks, I need some help.
Monday is Ethan's turn for Discovery Day in his first grade class. Discovery Day is when a kid's parent/s get to come in and talk about their job or hobby or teach a craft or game. Andrew's job is boring, and being a stay at home mom doesn't provide much entertainment, either. Neither of us really have hobbies that we could share that wouldn't make the kids fall asleep, so I'm stumped. I've been stressing over it for weeks and have come up with nothing that doesn't involve dissecting a fish or buying a bunch of prizes that would break my bank. (Now is not the time for bank breaking.)
I have to take forty-five minutes to entertain these kids with something smashing! The pressure is on.
I'll give you some examples of what people have done, and then you can give me all your brilliant ideas and save my tail.
A few weeks ago, one boy had his grandfather come in and talk about space. He brought each of the kids a picture he took of a black hole with his telescope. Impressive, right?
Last week, a mom came in and talked about plants. She had the kids match up real seeds with pictures of what they would grow into, and then they made flowers out of cookies and gum drops. Score one for her.
Several weeks back some dad came in with coloring books from his job where he is a communications engineer for aircraft or something, and he helped each of the kids make those old fashioned telephones out of plastic cups and string... That just seems very so-so to me. Maybe you had to be there.
I thought a little bit about having Andrew talk about fishing...but my ideas are either expensive or grotesque. I also thought about bringing in some costumes and props and having them put on a short play, which I would video tape and then we would watch together while eating popcorn...but I don't know if there would be enough time or if my circa 2001 video camera would hook up to their tv system.
Ok - so help a girl out! I don't want to embarrass Ethan with my lack of creativity! And hurry! I only have two days to prepare!

Wow. That sounds SO not fun (not to rub it in or anything). And seriously, 45 whole minutes? Here's the thought that came to me: since you're a SAHM, just play games with them! Go to gameskidsplay.net or partygamecentral.com and just find a whole bunch of games to play with them. Or, take a look in Cameron's scout book and do one of the activities in there. At the end, give them all a cheap little candy like smarties or something and then breathe a sigh of relief that you survived!
Erin, that's about the best idea I've ever heard. Thanks!
Sorry I read this late.
You could have done some of the minute to win it gimics. I think they would be fun with kids and CHEAP. Mostly they involve a lot of ping pong balls.
HOW DID IT GO?
