Andrew told me tonight that we need to do something amazing for our 10th Anniversary, which is coming up in April. While I would love to take the trip to Italy that I have been dreaming of since I was 16, that particular trip won't be in the cards until our bank account is a little fatter and our kids a little older.
So! We came up with a few ideas...
#1 - re-create a part of our honeymoon and spend a day or two in California, hit Disneyland, like we did back in the day, maybe San Francisco... But I don't know if I could do Disneyland without the kids. I would feel like the most horrible person in the world.
#2 - a cruise. A short, cheap cruise, mind you. But, while that would be nice, I just can't help but feel like I would be paranoid about the water the whole time. I don't swim... And I don't get overly excited about being forced to mingle with strangers. Maybe I have the wrong idea. I think the sunsets and the views would be amazing, but I don't feel like I'm a cruise kind of girl. Plus, that could get spendy with airfare, etc...
#3 - Hop a flight to New York and see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. I've seen it once, but Andrew hasn't yet had the privilege. I've wanted to go to New York for as long as I can remember, (though not as desperately as Italy). How cool would that be? And we'd only have to sucker someone into watching our kids for two days and one night, so, better odds of this becoming reality.
#4 - Anyone seen Yes Man? Jim Carrey? Ever since I saw that movie I have wanted to walk into an airport and catch the next available flight to wherever it might be going and let fate have it's way with me. It has the potential to be a huge bummer, but if you went into it with an attitude of having an unprecedented adventure with the love of your life, it could be flippin' incredible! Hawaii would have to be off limits, along with anything international because that's just too big an undertaking. Seriously though? We're talking surprises and fun around every corner. But what if our destination became Bismark, North Dakota? Yikes!
So, do any of these ideas sound like fun to anyone else? Care to contribute an idea of your own? I'm excited just thinking about it!

I vote either option #1 or #3. Here's my reasoning:
#1 - would be very sweet and nostalgic. And you could actually enjoy Disneyland without the pressures of having little ones there. The family will all get there eventually. Also, this would probably be your cheapest bet.
#2 - I'm not a fan of cruises either. True, I've never been on one, but they can be expensive, and you basically spend your entire trip in a floating hotel. Depending on the type of cruise, they can be very group oriented, with table assignments and dinner times, etc. Not my cup of tea.
#3 - New York and a broadway show would be amazing. I do have first hand experience in this one, so my opinion can be trusted more over #2. You would absolutely love this trip. Love it. But, New York can be really pricey too - so you would need to watch for fare and hotel specials.
#4 - it's a great idea in theory, but the reality is, you would probably end up in Scranton, OH with no idea what to do. Also, since last minute fares can be very expensive, you will probably have spent a fortune on your exotic Scranton getaway.
Just my thoughts. Hope you have a great time - whatever you decide!
I kind of agree about Disneyland - I would feel terrible too! Plus, you know you'd have to lie to your kids about where you had been, to avoid hearing the whining and recriminations for the next forever, and lying to your kids about Disneyland may or may not send you to H-E-Double-Toothpicks, and do you really want to take that chance? ;)
Eric and I just took a "trip" for our 12th in August, just to Park City. We came back on one day to borrow Eric'c parent's 4-wheeler and went up Farmington Canyon for the day, which turned out to be the funnest day! We also went to a couple movies, which we never get time to do, went to a few of our fave restaraunts, walked around Cabella's and Barnes and Noble, saw our fave improve show in Orem, and basically nothing too spectacular, but it was very fun and romantic! The only thing is, next time I think we would save money on the hotel, send the kids away to Grandma's, and just do all those things while sleeping at home every night!
How about a nice dinner out in SLC and a nice hotel..like the Hilton or the Grand America.
Cruises are freaking awesome! That's my vote for sure. Lots to do and no forced mingling if that isn't your thing (it's not for me either). We love going on cruises.
NYC is horrifically expensive. To eat, to sleep, to get tickets to anything, transportation. And as someone who also loves Phantom and has seen it multiple times in many different theaters, while it is always magical-the magic is in the show-not the location. I promise. :)
As for the show up at the airport and see where you can go game? We did a slightly different version of that game through a German airline (pay a certain amount and get a "surprise" ticket) and we ended up in Dresden, Germany. Think if you got off a plane and discovered you were in Yacolt, WA. That was about how Dresden was. We were bored out of our minds and ended up in the hotel room watching BBC the entire weekend because there was NOTHING to do there. NOTHING!
definatley a cruise! you can just be with eachother and ignore all the others and the food is all free and you get to stop at some fun places, and it's incredibly romantic as long as you don't get sea sick. you can find cheap cruises, really! as for Italy, we wanna go too!!!!!
Then there is a visit to DC to see family and have a free place to stay and lots of people who want to see you and feed you!
Or meet you in NYC and see a show with you!
